When defining a Lean Six Sigma project, ensure that its scope is clear by creating a high-level process map. A more detailed map can be developed during the Measure phase. In the Define phase, focus on the main objectives of the process, service or product requiring improvement.
The main benefits of a high-level process map include:
- Outlining the overall flow of information and materials, from the supplier to the customer.
- Providing a diagram of steps, events, operations and associated resources.
- Helping everyone involved understand how different parts of the company work together to provide a product or service.

Each tool is explained in more detail in a separate article.
